Suspended Sculpture

Once in a while I come accross something that just blows my mind. Claire Morgan's work is one of those things.

"I am inspired by the world around me, and the things that happen there. My materials are things that I find in the world around me, both natural and manufactured. My materials have ranged from dried flower petals, leaves, and plant seeds, to animals, both taxidermy and rotting carcasses, blood, torn polythene bags, flies and rotting fruit."

Installation art has always been a debatable form of sculpture in the art world. When looking at this type of work, you may ask yourself; who is the intended viewer? Would this piece work in a different environment? If so, would it have the same reaction?. I love art for all of these questions and the thousand more you can think of.

I particularly like Claire Morgan's work because it has an amazing sense of movement in it, although all of the pieces are stationary and placed in a static position. Most of her work is telling an interesting story. The bird falling through the strawberries looks like a scene from a fantasy book. A moment in time, captured and suspended in our reality.

Claire Morgan was born in Belfast. She attended University of Ulster and Northumbria University where she achieved a first class degree in Sculpture. She is now based in London.

Etsy: Twelfth Night Design

For those of you who don't know, Twelfth Night Design is ME. I sell vintage goods on etsy under Twelfth Night Design. I have so many things waiting to be posted...I will do it soon! Below are some of the things I have up now!

I just couldn't resist posting this today. It's an ad, from the 50's, for deodorant. That look on her face is exactly how I feel on a sweaty, humid day...when I don't always feel "lovely to love". :)

Swim in Style

I was looking back on my Synchronized swimming days and wondering what it would have been like if we wore swim caps like these. Found via Modcloth.

I love this picture below of a youth Synchro practice, taken by bobestphoto on flickr. I sooo miss those days of 3 hour practices in the pool.

This picture is from an article in a 1955 life magazine.

Maybe I should go swimming!

K-kinda busy

Stepping out of my apartment every day leads me to many unpredictable experiences. Today was no different. Opening the door to the brash sunlight, I threw on my sunglasses and proceeded to walk to my car. A group of black men were huddled nearby talking loudly and making their presence known. I gave them a polite smile, wanting no response other than a disinterested nod. No sooner did that thought cross my mind than did one of the men yell out, "HEY LADY GAAAA-GAAAA". I did not nourish them with a response and continued on my way, listening to the cat calls which consisted of, "LADY GAGA, WHERE YOU GOIN' GIRL!?" "Hey yeeeaahhhh, that GAaaa-GA!" "Lady Bay-bee!"

It got me thinking in the car, did they REALLY think I look like Lady Gaga? Or would any generation use the most current pop icon to cat call at women. Did my mother get, "YO MADONNA! WHERE YOU GOIN' GIRL??"

Although I do not entertain the absurd notion that I resemble Lady Gaga in the slightest, I feel the urge to indulge in this comparison. I took a Gaga inspired picture and still cant see the resemblance.

What do you think?

Maybe I should get some Gaga paraphernalia to complete the look...

Love: Architecture

I am in love with architectural design. While interning at the Tweed Museum of Art in Duluth, MN I was lucky enough to sift through archival photos of the construction and re-design of the galleries. These architectural photos found via Edward Cella Art+Architecture, reminded me of some of those pictures I would look at.

How amazing would these be on your walls? Or this poster below from lilcoletterpress.

Its a clever play on words, refering to the 20th century inventor, mathematician and futurist, born in 1895, named R. Buckminster Fuller. (Amazingly lived to be 97!) He was admitted to Harvard twice, and expelled both times. He went from job to job until he was broke.

An illness killed his young daughter, leading him to revelation. He was determined to make his life “an experiment to find what a single individual can contribute to changing the world and benefiting all humanity.1
His most well known invention was the geodesic dome which revolutionized the field of engineering.

By the end of his life he held over 20,000 patents.

“For the first time in history it is now possible to take care of everybody at a higher standard of living than any have ever known. Only ten years ago the ‘more with less’ technology reached the point where this could be done. All humanity now has the option to become enduringly successful.” -B.Fuller

Postcard fun

So for some time now, a friend and I have been exchanging postcards whenever we go on a trip.

He's been to quite a few more places...and I have a box overflowing with interesting scenes from around the world. My favorite is an armadillo he sent 3 years ago. After that armadillo, I've often feel inadequate in the postcard field but my solution to this is to send him postcards from different cities nearby.

Maybe this one should be first?

Past to Present

For all of your blogger lovers, I would recommend checking out wdydwyd? (Which stands for Why do you do what you do?) Its similar to postsecret...except the people are not anonymous and the messages are usually more upbeat!

This picture posted by
Tsirkus Fotografika, inspired me. I love his answer to the question because I used to feel this same way quite often. His photographs bring back the old style we love so much. Here are some more pictures from the gallery:

On a recent visit to Duluth this weekend, a friend and I decided to have a photo shoot of our own! Inspired by numerous pictures we see online every day, we took matters into our own hands! Neither of us are fantastic photographers, but we have a lot of ideas. So here is a picture from the first of many experimental photo shoots with a dear friend.

A small vignette of friendship.

Check out her blog, The Joy of Life, for a few more pictures from the day.
